Ever changing
Clearly the greatest selling point of this cottage is the view across to Suilven and Canisp (I could mention one or two issues that are not its selling point - like the kitchen equipment and the oven...). Here are the white washed cottages of Lochinver in evening light, set against the green of the hillside. For the first few days, the hills were predominantly in cloud, but since yesterday afternoon (I'm back blipping), when the weather took a turn for the better, we've enjoyed quite a lot of sunshine.
Our walk on Tuesday was up the River Kirkaig, not - as most would do - in order to see the Falls of Kirkaig - but to get the great reveal of Suilven. It was a fun walk with quite a few ups and downs, although guidebook said the height gain was negligible. Actually it was well over 100 of your fitbit floors... That's because nowhere in Assynt is flat. It's constantly undulating. And nearly 20k steps. I think we've discovered a new mode of walking on this holiday. We're just enjoying using my new found freedom to get into the landscape, and whilst all of the peaks are likely to be beyond us, the walk in, and the visits to lochs and so on miles away from human habitation is giving us huge pleasure.
After lunch at the excellent An Cala cafe in Lochinver, we vegged out here for a while. Then in the evening, we went sunset chasing. It was a bit unsatisfactory for two reasons. The first was that the drive north to Clachtoll and beyond was into blinding sunlight. The second was that when we got to the Stoerhead lighthouse, not only was it blowing a hoolie, but the north westerly horizon was completely occluded with cloud. Oh well....
