Ephemeral memorial

It has been a month today since the double-murder on a commuter train, May 26. The flowers, candles, teddy bears, and most of the personal letters and cards have disappeared, but people keep going to leave chalked messages and putting up new ones when the rain washes the old ones away. I went back today to see what was left.

It occurred to me to wish for more memorials--memorials to Quanice Hayes, Terrell Johnson, Larnell Bruce, and others killed in hate crimes or police-profiling. I wrote to Quanice's mother and grandmother to ask them if they would like a chalk memorial to Quanice, and if so, where. I haven't yet heard back from them.

The extra is a small display of yarn art free for the taking, just to the left of the elbow of the photographer in the main photograph.
