The Demon Drink

A long day. Many thanks to Paul Freeney for his invitation to join with his group on a Photowalk in Dublin today. About 45 of us turned up for a brilliant tour of Prospect Cemetery (more usually known as Glasnevin) in the forenoon and the Botanic Gardens after lunch. Glasnevin contains the remains of most of the leaders and fighters in the Irish struggle for nationhood along with another 1.6 million graves. Considering that the present population of the city is about 1.4 million, that means that there are more residents of this major graveyard than there are inhabitants of the city. Work that one out!!
When all was said and done we retreated to the famous "Gravediggers" public house for the "post mortem" on the day. This is an establishment famous throughout the land but one I had never been in before. What a place! The lounge has been slightly updated but the public bar is something straight out of James Joyce. Dark, gloomy but full of life and cobwebs and good humour. While waiting for our beers to be served I noticed this old cash till, no longer in use but retained as a bit of a showpiece, and parked beside it a display of the stock. Looking at the figure on the front of the till drawer, I was instantly reminded of the phrase often used to describe alcoholic beverages. "The Demon Drink"
So, despite all the pretty flowers in the gardens and all the historical connections in the graveyard, what I have to share with you is the very last photo I shot for the day. Have a great week everybody!
