Bank Roll
This roll of bank notes held by my father in law was collected by him when he was in the RAF. Apparently it was a tradition he picked up (I think from American service men) to collect a note from each country they flew to. They are selotaped into a long role, and include some interesting places such as Palestine, Egypt .... However, there is one from India, which he has no explanation for, as he did not think he'd been that far.
We also looked through his log book, and noted with interest war time entries such as his part in Operation Varsity on 24.3.1945. He was navigator, and on this occasion they towed one of the gliders that were released ahead of the Allied front line to secure a crossing over the Rhine.
Through some amazing connections he was reunited with his pilot and bomb aimer in recent years. He had a photocopy of his pilots diary for the week in which Operation Varsity took place who reported that they arrived back with only 15 minutes of juice left, that after a 6h 20m sortie.
