What do you see, little girl?
A land free of arial bombardment, free of streets reduced to rubble, free of lungs scarred by chemical weapons, free of wailing mothers holding their dead children in their arms, free of fathers bearing makeshift wooden coffins to improvised burial sites on the edge of a town that once was yours? Perhaps, too, a young boy, also an immigrant but from South America, kicking his football against a wall in a sun-dappled park in sun-blessed, bomb-free Barcelona while his mother leans against a wall and chats this Sunday morning with her friend before heading off to a simple but nourishing lunch, passing the square around the block where people dance swing in the open air and others applaud their mastery of the art form and smile and laugh.
