One more mason's mark
Today, we finally had the book launch for the new History & Guidebook for Cullen Auld Kirk.
It went well. Lots of people turned up, the presentations went down well, and I'm told that in the course of the afternoon there were a pleasingly high number of on-the-spot sales (excellent news, as the pending church restoration project is seriously in need of funds).
The author, though, took me by surprise when in his talk he mentioned my efforts to track down and photograph masons' marks...then on my behalf offered a bottle of wine a prize to anyone who could show us a previously unknown one by the end of the day! Straight after the launch, a local lady took me out into the graveyard and showed me one she'd spotted before, on a column supporting one of the "table" graves. It's certainly a new one on me - we haven't recorded this mark elsewhere in the church - and as it's been sheltered by being underneath the slab, it's in amazingly good condition. Well worth a bottle of wine!
