Little Sparta
Despite it being a bit overcast we decided to head out up the country into the hills above Biggar - to Little Sparta, one time home of celebrated sculptor and fruitcake, Ian Hamilton Finlay. It's a most wonderful, magical place but I suspect for the majority of visitors, myself included, the art is hard to understand. His love of the French Revolution - there seems to be something of a love of its mercilessness, cleansing and purity which has unpleasant resonances in the 20th century. Ok, straightforwardly, what was he on about?
It did get us thinking about some art for our own hortus conclusus though - especially having watched The Art Show on Sky Arts about Emily Young. We may have to start looking at crowdfunding...
