Moel Hebog

A great walk straight from the Hut with FWG up onto a fascinating hill that I'm pretty sure was a first for me.
Apparently the view looking back towards Snowdon along the Gwynnant valley is one of Wales finest. Sadly we'll have to go back to check as at the 600m contour we entered the cloud and stayed intermittently there until we got back to the Bwlch. This shot was taken from the lower East slopes.
FWG has gone with the same fascinating extra, so amazing that we've both added a hand for scale. Around 650m we found a band of these nodules (sometimes described as pillow lava or concretions). Having spoken with a geologist friend the only given (geology often seems to be a process of choosing the most prevalent theory) is that they are siliceous nodules formed within volcanic Ash tuff, but under water, produced by the upward movement of entrapped water vapour and volatiles at the tuff/wet sediment interface. i.e. (very) hot tuff hits the wet sediment. Fascinating.

The walk out through Cwm Meillionen was like a nature masterclass - I've made an effort not to replicate FWG's extras but we saw literally dozens of wildflowers, strange fungus and my second extra, this amazing collection of Devil's Matchsticks completely covering a 2ft high tree stump.
