Thunderbird with Duznuk'wa
We left Victoria this morning to travel to Cowichen Lake and en route we stopped in Duncan. In Duncan they have a series of totem poles around the town and this is one of them. What is helpful is that there is an information plaque alongside the totem which explains the meaning of the totem.
'Thunderbird first helped the first big house beams into place and is the source of mythological and supernatural power. The fearsome legend of Danzuk'wa with her craggy face and pendulous breasts is an object of terror but also of wealth and power. Her arms are outstretched in a symbol of mourning or to grab a strayed child from outside the village. Her black and red colouring represents the underworld'.
We chose to stay in a motel on Lake Cheminus believing it to be beside the Lake, however, this was not to be and in fact there are only a few points where there is public access to the lakeside and most of the lakeside property are private house. Oh well, you can't win them all !
