Good news: the gosling that was entangled is now free!
I was at work yesterday, but my mother checked on the goslings throughout the day (to see whether the RSPCA had managed to visit and help it). They did not visit, but when she went at about 6PM, she could hear the mother honking, and the goslings peeping, and approached the pond to see them all in a huddle in the water, except for the father who was standing tall on the shore. She moved around the pond to find that a man was standing by the edge (behind rushes near the father goose) holding the injured and entangled gosling. That man was Artem from Latvia and he had plucked the gosling out of the water after noticing that it was entangled and in need of help.
My mother rushed to help him: he had the gosling in his arms with its back to his chest, making it difficult for him to see its legs and try to untangle the twine. My mother set about untangling: she says that the gosling would wriggle and chirrup from time to time, but seemed quite resigned to being caught. The family were all making a lot of noise though. The cord was well and truly tangled (tightly), but my mother bit through the twine between its legs, and another women approached and helped to untangle its other leg. They got it free, and released it back to its family which all promptly zoomed over to the safety and isolation of the island in the middle of the pond.
My mother asked Artem how he had caught the gosling, and he said that he used to look after geese at home, so was experienced at catching and holding them; he was the perfect person to swoop to its rescue, but it sounds like a great team effort.
My mother said that the cord had cut into its legs, but that it seemed relatively superficial: we visited this morning, and the gosling was limping slightly and fussing at its legs and feet (which must still have been uncomfortable), but when we returned this afternoon we couldn't even work out which gosling it had been! Phew!
Such a relief!
