Is it a bee? Is it a fly?

No, it's volucella Pellucens or the pellucid hoverfly. Lots of them about at Quarrymill today although don't think I've ever seen one before. Like the Belted Galloways of the hoverfly world. It's getting nicely coated in pollen.
