Samaria Gorge
We were up at 4am to get on the coach at 5.20am outside the supermarket in Kolymbari, Crete, (the next village to ours) to take us to do the 10 mile walk through Samaria Gorge starting at Sfakia (Omolos) to Agia Roumeli beach.
We started the walk at 8.15am (the blip photo shows the start at the top) with hundreds of others. It was a bit of a crowd starting but by 12.30pm we were on the beach at Agia Roumeli, one of the very early finishers. We enjoyed a few hours on a sun lounger before getting the 5.30pm ferry and then coach back to where we were collected.
The length of the walk is easy but what makes it difficult is the stress on the knees/legs walking about 2 miles down slippery rocks which then continue the rest of the walk.
The blip extra gives an indication how high the gorge walls can reach. For those interested the link on Samaria Gorge gives further facts and information.
We got back to our apartment about 9pm. Quite a long day. We enjoyed the walk but agreed that it is now very commercial and there are other gorges to walk which are just as good and free - which we've done.
