Life's Little Moments

Baby, it's hot outside...

Today was a stinker of a day with temps just over 90 F.  Anytime you see a bird laying on it's belly with wings and tail spread around it on the ground, you know it's hot.  The first time I saw a bird do this, it was a titmouse and he was laying in a bird feeder.  I was certain he was dead or dying so I raced over to help him.  Imagine my surprise when he hopped up and flew off.  So, today when I saw this Mourning Dove lying like a rag on the patio, I knew it was just trying to cool off.

The bird baths have all been doing a landslide business today.  Birds and chippies stopping for frequent drinks and sparrows and robins taking frequent baths.  After spending about 15 drippy minutes out there, the bird bath was starting to look mighty tempting to me, too!

I decided to opt out of today's walk with my naturalist group - it's just too hot and, frankly, I'm a little fatigued from the trip.  Good day to visit MIL and stay close to home.  Hubs is in Connecticut at a meeting but will be home tonight.

First thing I heard when I awoke at 5:30 this morning was the sound of a bluebird singing.  I peeked out the upstairs window and - sure enough - two bluebirds were directly below going in and out of the nest box.  A quick peek inside later confirmed that the nest is coming along very quickly.  I doubt if it is the same pair that just finished nesting in the back garden as it just seems too soon for them to be starting a second nest but who knows?

Tomorrow is supposed to be another hot one.  Which means a good day for bugs.
