1.13.56
There is something beautifully fetal looking in this underwater turn. Then Toa Zheng sprung into action showing us his peak performance of his life. He smashed the 100m backstrong (S6) world record with a jaw dropping 1.13.56.
Tao was one of China's first gold medalists in the Paralympic Games, the country would go on to top the medal table. It's not bad considering the country's near non-existant approach to disability rights until recently.
To see China as a nation, begin to adapt to the rights and needs 83 million disabled people since Bejing 2008 is testiment to the agreement of the IPC and OPC to run both the Olympic and Paralympic Games 'in parallel.'
I wonder if the same who be true for London 2012?
I hope so. Just as the athletes were getting ready for this first race of the night, we heard the most outrageous conversation from the women behind. It was along the lines of disgust that the athlete had no arms and being put out because they thought they were coming to the Olympics. I'm not sure whether I'm pleased they swiftly left or sad that they missed such an awesome and special educational opportunity.
