Godmanchester Chinese bridge
Yesterdays's stormy weather delayed our recording at Portholme Meadow, but this afternoon we returned, despite Chris having caught a nasty cold from Lizzy, and feeling definitely under par. It was still breezy, but early sunshine brought out hordes of horse flies, one of the perils of recording in riverside meadows in summer. We had planned to complete the work, but by later afternoon the clouds had gathered and it became quite chilly, so we decided that it would be more sensible to finish it tomorrow.
On the way back to the car I took a few pictures on my phone, including this one of the very picturesque Chinese Bridge, originally built in 1827 in the Chinese Chippendale style. It has been replaced twice after falling into disrepair, once in 1960 and more recently in 2010, when a replacement bridge manufactured in Yorkshire was lifted into place by a crane.
