Conservation frustration
There is a rare little plant near Arnside and Mrs. K. has been working hard to save it for the future.
As a result of a meeting with the National Trust and English Nature, Kew have agreed to keep seed in its Seed Bank in case the small colony of plants should be lost.
Mrs. K. is attempting to collect some seeds to send to Kew but her efforts are being frustrated.
The seed capsules are very small and when they ripen they explode and the minute seeds are spread over the grassy surroundings. The only way to counter this is by placing little bags over the seed heads once the flowers are over. They are held in place by small plastic clips. The seeds are then retained in the bags.
Mrs. K. has spent a lot of time placing the bags and regularly checking on them.
We have just got back from a week away and you can imagine her feelings when she discovered that someone had removed all the bags and clips. It must have been humans as they had pulled out the golf tees pushed into the ground to mark the position of the plants.
Who would do something like that? Did they think they were removing litter or are they fanatics who believe we should not interfere with nature.
Any way we have now put up notices and are trying again to collect seed. Mrs. K. is not easily defeated as I have found over the past 58 years.
