Bread shop, Old Souk, Aswan

I walked into town today to visit the Old Souk I was there in the Christmas of 2001 and had vague memories. Now there's more little local shops, bread shops and lots of herb and spice shops. Definitely more for local shopping.

The people here in Aswan are friendly and wanted to chat. Some invited me to sit down, and I did with a couple of women. We had a good laugh.

I saw this bread shop while chatting. Behind the man in white is where they bake the pita stale bread. There were two men working the very hot oven, with very little space for them to keep away from its heat.

There's a sad lack of tourists, while it's very hot and it's Ramadan, I had hoped there'd be more.

I attempted to visit a Church, but the local woman who was sitting out the front couldn't rouse him. The policeman (with rifle) took me inside the gates to see if I could find someone. He told me that it would be open in the evening. He also told me when he worked, and I was very kind and his name was Ahmed. The US Embassy has suggested people not visit churches, but given it wasn't open, I thought I'd be safe. It was also opposite the local police station.

Come to Aswan, it's quiet and friendly.
