This is the Whithorn Reliquary, dating from the 12th century. On the left is the cover, with a base of pearls. The gold circle on the right would have been hidden underneath. It has a space in the middle for a piece of the Cross, and small bits of saints' bones around it.
The Reliquary is part of an exhibition at Whithorn, a place of pilgrimage because of it's association with St Ninian, who brought Christianity to Scotland.
We had a wonderful trip out today on the Community bus. I fell asleep on the way home....
