Palais des Papes, Avignon

Our first sight of the huge palace where, in the 14th century, a succession of popes lived rather than in Rome. It's been through a great deal of destruction and been used for various purposes like soldiers' dormitories in the intervening years, but is now restored but rather empty.Our hotel was immediately to the left of this photo.

The area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
