Toledo

The events in London have overshadowed our feelings about today.  We’re in Toledo, a city once famed for its religious tolerance - a place where Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures could co-exist in a spirit of mutual understanding and shared learning.  At least for a while.

I’ve wanted to visit this place for a long time - ever since I first saw a picture of El Greco’s View of Toledo.  As a young man, uneducated in the finer points of art appreciation, it looked sort of ‘modern’ to my eyes.  Certainly not something painted in the early 1600s.

The internet is now awash with ‘views of Toledo’ all taken from a hill overlooking the city.  Like the one our hotel sits on.

The sky-line is dominated by the Alcazar.  This is the view from our hotel balcony.  It’s a privilege to be here.
