But, then again . . . . .

Comfrey.

Back in the spring, a lot of the old Christmas trees were felled quite near to the hives to make way for more cultivation; I was surprised to hear that there had been no conflict during the process. Heavy machinery doing the felling and logging followed by removal of stumps must have caused a lot of ground vibration and would have annoyed me had I been present.

While Man is very good(?) at exterminating individual species, he is not very good at destroying life; so it is that this comfrey plant was not deterred from its pre-ordained life cycle and is quite happily growing up in its new environment. The natural pollinators of this flower are those bumble bees with longer proboscises such as the garden bumble bee; however, the buff tail has learnt (depending on your definition) to cut a hole in the base of the flower to steal the nectar without providing the pollination service in return. Once the buff tail has done the dirty work, the door is open to all manner of insects to take advantage including honey bees, hover flies and wasps.

I must hunt around and see if I can find some examples of flowers damaged in this way; there are vast swathes of it here, it may take a little while.
