Silver Fern
(Cyathea dealbata) also known as the silver tree fern or silver fern, ponga or punga, is a medium size tree fern named for the silver underside of its fronds and is endemic to New Zealand. It is also a national symbol, one which we will see a great deal of in the coming weeks as the highly anticipated British and Irish Lions Rugby team tours New Zealand. The first game kicks off tonight and we look forward to welcoming the team and their supporters as they tour the country.
The extra photo shows the underside of a frond in more detail - part of a dead tree had fallen on this plant, exposing the underside of the frond - the little black dots you can see are the seeds.
