Godstone alms houses...
...well, the well in front of the houses.
These houses are so beautiful and peaceful. A friend from school and I visited here this afternoon and we enjoyed the walk to the church in Old Godstone past Bay Pond (my extra) which was very quiet, and walked round the church yard and onto the Alms Houses. My other extra is the inside of a greenhouse belonging to one of the residents. So beautifully tidy and with some amazing specimens of cacti!
I love this village for so many reasons!
The Homes were founded in 1872 and were built in a romantic half timbered free Tudor style to a design of Sir George Gilbert Scott and were founded through the sole generosity of Mrs Augusta Nona Hunt a wealthy widow who lived in the parish with her daughter Mabel Fanny. Mabel died tragically shortly after her 16th birthday and in her grief Mrs Hunt resolved to commemorate her daughter by the founding of St Mary’s Homes for the elderly of the parish.
