'Sport' setting not required!
Goat showing is a strange business. We started at 6.15 showing the milkers with 'full udders' , milked them, showed them again, showed the youngsters and were finished by 12.30 but had to wait till 6pm to milk again. It leaves one with a lot of time to look round the show! Posy and Zinnia left for their new homes. Posy has gone to Yorkshire but Zinnia remains mine and is only a few miles away. Both got firsts and Zinnia the Breed Challenge Certificate. You will get more goat-show photos next year!
So what is that weird sport which does not require the camera's sport setting and what on earth are those lads wearing? This is something which you will have either recognised at once or be a bit puzzled by. It is Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling. The contestants grasp each other, make slight moves, then suddenly one is thrown onto the ground, they shake hands, and that is it! The chap in the flat cap is the judge.
The competitions start with judging the costumes. In the past these, especially the velvet pants, were very highly embroidered. They seem a bit more low-key today.
