The early bird

I know that this bird is about a year old.  How do I know this?

Well, you see those brownish feathers in his wing?  Those are the baby feathers he fledged from his nest with when he was growing up, about this time last year.  Once he was independent from his parents, he replaced all his non-flight feathers with new, better-quality, jet black ones, contrasting with the budget brown ones he fledged with.  When he moults again this year, he'll replace all his feathers, including those brown ones, and have jet-black feathers all over.
