Bobbin Mill at "The Howk"
As planned Kanyl and I were out for a wander, partly for exercise and partly looking for blippertuinties. As Kanyl hadn't been up "The Howk" in Caldbeck that was where we headed. It was great weather sunny but not too warm. The first sight of interest as you wander along is the old Bobin Mill.
The mill opened in 1857 and worked until 1924. It was said to have the second largest water wheel in the country at 13.1m diameter (42 feet 5 inches). This was powered by the Cald Beck which gives the village its name. Despite the name the mill made other products as well as the spinning and threading bobbins for the cotton industry. The other products for local use included washing dollies, broomsticks and even clog soles.
We continued on up the Howk and on the way down stepped off the path to let approaching people pass, only to be greeted with the statement "how far do you have to go to meet your next door neighbour!" A & M and a grandchild were out for the walk as well.
