Sea of flowers and balloons, St Ann's Square, MCR
When the business of the day had been concluded we walked back into the city along the Rochdale Canal, a route I've used several times in the past. We called in at Debenhams for tea and scones (very good too) before walking on to the memorial area for the victims of the Manchester bombings last week.
As you might expect, it was a very moving experience. Crowds of people playing their respects and leaving momentos to add to the enormous collection that was already there. The words, poems and thoughts of people were inspirational and showed that people cared and that the city would be stronger and more determined than ever as a result of this terrible event. The atmosphere was hushed, people in quite contemplation, much like you find in a church or great cathedral.
We were glad we went to see the tribute, so soon and when the hurt is still so raw. We hope that so much good will come from this tragedy and that it will play a part in eradicating such extremist reactions across the world.
