Castlefreke
The wondrous Castlefreke. Built sometime in the 15C, remodelled in the 18C and finally revamped in impressive Gothic style in 1820. Home to the Barons Carbery, as landlords went not too bad - the nicest being Lord Algernon and Lady Mary. Damaged by a fire in 1910 and restored just in time for the heir John Carbery's 21st birthday in 1913.The said John was a bit of a renegade and later, to his mother's fury, announced his intention to sell Castlefreke which he did in the 1920s. He later renounced his title, was a skilled pilot specializing in dramatic aerial display, part of the Happy Valley set in Kenya, a friend of Michael Collins, a Nazi sympathiser and a bit of a cad and bounder!
The house was more or less dismantle in the 1950s and the roof taken off. In 2005 the youngest son of the late Lord Carbery bought back the house and attempted a restoration. Due to a legal wrangle things have come to a halt. Sadly you can get no closer than that as there is a fearsome barrage of No Trespassing notices, barbed wire and metalwork.
We've had a great day - a blipmeet, first of all at Long Strand which was very blowy and the café less than satisfactory; then a walk in the woods, including a visit to a rather elusive holy well - see extra for the Four Weird Creatures getting rid of any lurking warts!
