Anna's Hummingbird

Today was one of those days when I did a little bit of everything and not much of anything I deadheaded a few things,. I pulled a few weeds. I sat and watched the hummingbirds buzzing the hummingbird feeder, and me!

I took the last of the small logs out of the wheelbarrow in the middle of the patio, stacked them next to the back steps and hauled the empty wheelbarrow up all the stairs to its proper place by the compost bins.

I sat on the porch for awhile and watched the hummingbirds in the bottlebrush. It's not a very good picture but it does illustrate how well camouflaged they can be. If it weren't for the whirring of their wings, I probably wouldn't have noticed them.

The passiflora is beginning to bloom, the roses are on their second set of buds and the lantana are finally starting to bloom although they are not so color coordinated in this year's garden as they have been in the past. The streletzia are lined up against the house like a bunch of crazed birds, and the goldfinches are flocking to the edge of the giant pot/fountain.

There are hundreds of lizards in all the rock walls. They drive Rudy crazy and he'll dig for days in the same spot, but I don't think he has ever caught one. The turkey vultures circle lazily above the hills, but there is a sense of purpose in their flight patterns.

The spike on the agave continues to grow skyward and is now putting out dozens of 'arms' like candelabra. We are starting to feel as if we are being taken over by an army of aliens as the ones  on the hill are growing dozens of 'babies' from their spreading roots. OilMan goes after a few a day with his digging iron, but it's beginning to feel like a losing battle unless we sign on some helpers.

For the moment, however, it is a perfect temperature on the patio and time for a glass of wine.
