Uffington white horse
After the scorching heat yesterday we had quite a thunderstorm in the night and woke to cloud. However, by the time George was ready to go out the skies had cleared fairly well and we decided to head up to the nearby Uffington White Horse.
This is the oldest of our white horses dating back to 1400-600 BC. It was kept in good order over the millennia by local people making a day of it, as evidenced by this little poem :
The owlde white horse wants zettin to rights
And the squire hev promised good cheer
Zo we'll gee un a zcrape to kip in zhape
And a'll last for many a year
There are records of entertainment laid on for the day including catching the greased pig and chasing a wheel of cheese down the scarp!
We didn't participate in any of these today, but did enjoy a British Barbecue in the rather chilly evening garden.
