Portobello Saturday
In the few weeks since I have walked down there last Portobello has transformed into summer tourist mode.
The most surprising change has been to the north end (between Portobello Green and Golborne Road). These temporary pitches were historically taken up by traders involved in house clearance. You could find real bargains and a lot of tat.
Now small businesses making unusual clothing, crafts and curated antiques are taking over, blending the north gradually with the south.
Not all the locals are happy about this and I was heckled for taking pictures (from a considerable distance I have to add) by one of the old Rastafarians. I shouted back that I couldn't actually see him he was so far away.
Anyway the picture represents a Portobello success story. Sara Tiara are designs by Sara Sansara. I photographed her about 8 years ago when she sold scarfs and floaty skirts. One of the original Portobello stall holders she has successfully moved current market, now producing high-end English eccentric one offs.
Go girl!
