The End of the Flight

This barge is just entering the final, of the 21 locks, of the Wigan Flight. Chatting to the couple, who seemed a tad weary I was astonished that they tackled the first lock at 9.15 this morning and the time recorded for this photo was 17.02. No wonder they seemed a little jaded. The total distance covered is about two and a half miles raising the canal about 200ft. An amazing feat of canal engineering which began in 1812 and took four years to complete.
