Occasionally, birds fly into my large glass door.  At the beginning, it sent a fright through me.  Now, I just shout out "dumb-ass" when I hear the thump.  They always seem to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and fly away.  I had a finch once sitting on my patio chair, not more than a foot away from the door.  It flew into the window, landed back on the chair, then flew into the window again.  That was a really dumb-ass bird.

I chose to blip this White-winged dove from among all the other photos I took today because I suffered my first known bird/window fatality.  As always, when I heard the loud thud, I reacted as I do normally.  A little while later, I noticed an oriole and moved closer to the door.  That's when I saw the White-winged dove laying on the cement, blood seeping from it's head.

Naturally, it was upsetting.  I can accept the loss of a critter in the wild when attacked by a predator.  It's the circle of life.
It's just that I never thought I would feel like the predator.
