The City of Locked Gardens

My Dear Fellow,

It always struck me as weird how gardens are locked up in Edinburgh. For years, St. Andrew Square gardens were locked up as well as the one in Charlotte Square and of course Queen Street gardens.

You hear tell of people who have the keys. I think American Jim had some for a while and would take Er Indoors into Queen Street for a smoke (before my time). I've never stopped being envious. Queen Street gardens in particular look lovely and usually contain at least one dog wagging around in there, all smug.

St. Andrew Square has been open since 2008, and I love it. They show movies in there in the summer and there are nice places to sit. Charlotte Square is opened in the summer during the book festival and I always look forward to that too.

Of course, there was the time I broke into the Charlotte Square gardens while pished. The problem being, I was SO pished I could not then break back out again. I expect the locked gardens lure a fair few unwary drunks like that every year. A Venus Garden Trap, if you will.

Fortunately I am FAR TOO sensible for that sort of ridiculous behaviour now. Of course I am. Shut up.
