Pofferttjes!
A trip to the Aurora Farmers' Market this morning brought this pleasant surprise: a poffertjes stand! That's a first for the market and a first for me in a very long time in a public place. Poffertjes, as the sign says, are mini Dutch pancakes (pronounced: POFF-er-tyus). At right you can see the dimpled griddle for cooking them. Two young ladies and their mom were busy at work and explaining to the curious what they were selling. You could also sample one, if you desired. They sold them for $5.50 and that got you 10 poffertjes, and a choice (or all) of icing sugar, mixed berry sauce, and whipped cream. We went for the works. They top it off with a little toothpick flag -- the Dutch flag, of course. Verdict: Yummy! I wish them well. Side note: If you remember having these at the Food Building at the Canadian National Exhibition in the late 1970s, that was my father's Dutch food stand and poffertjes were the main treat. That lasted only one or two years. Happily, the Food Building has a Dutch food stand again and they sell poffertjes, croquettes, nasi balls, frikadellen, frites, and other Dutch and Indonesian treats.
