Walking Group - Pennington Flash

Saturday 20th May 2017 (1729)

So we set off on the adventure, the unknown route. We followed a well marked path through the woods until it was barred by fallen trees, another path branched off to the left so we took that. I was getting concerned when it got narrower and more overgrown but was relieved when we reached another main path. After that it was no problem at all. 

Half way round, as we reached the canal, the heavens opened. We sheltered under trees for a while until it eased a bit. It wouldn't be our parish walk if we didn't get wet. We just kept telling ourselves it wasn't raining. 

We managed to persuade a lady to take this shot of the whole group for us. We were on the Leeds Liverpool canal and this sculpture is by Thompson Dagnall entitled "unlock". The old lock gates have been used to form a book which the artist says represents all the secrets and stories of the canals and also hints at the vast number of stories yet untold. 

Our story continued with a walk along the canal and then back to the car, followed by a lovely meal in the local pub, always a great way to finish a walk, especially a wet one. It was slightly shorter than normal at 4.85 miles.

The extra contains a friend we met on the way, especially for ANewDay. He has a wonderful moustache!
