Two photos together today - it’s been a big learning curve having to watch tutorials to achieve this result!!

When photographing a caterpillar recently I noticed a series of small holes along the side of the body. On searching the internet I discovered these are spiracles - otherwise known as  breathing holes.

Butterflies (larva, pupa and adult) don’t have lungs and these breathing holes open into a system of tubes that carry oxygen all over their bodies.

The second photo shows caterpillar feet from an angle I don’t normally photograph. It also shows the anal claspers. These hind ‘legs’ on the caterpillar are used to attach to the silk pad the caterpillar spins at the beginning of the chrysalis stage.


Thank you for the comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s Tui. I feel privileged to have these birds visiting my garden on a very regular basis through all the seasons. The white clerical-like collar feathers are the reason why this bird was often called the parson bird by the European colonists.
