under a big blue sky...

...we celebrated Mothers Day at a long Italian style lunch at 'La Fattoria' fast becoming our favourite place to celebrate special occasions.

Nonna's Table is five courses of deliciousness accompanied by Italian variety wines growing on site and made by the amazing Myattsfield winemakers 'just down the valley'.
Fiano, Vermentino, Barbera and Sangiovese are on the wine list and there are new vintages to come as the grapes grow strong in this lovely land...Nero D'Avola  and Pignoletto.

As to Mothers Day which is a HUGE deal here in Aus, I must admit to thinking it was a spin off from the American Mothers Day which falls at the same time of year.
However not so.
It does have an Australian origin

'In Australia, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.  The tradition of gift giving to mothers on Mother’s Day in Australia was started by Mrs Janet Heyden in suburban Sydney. In 1924 as a resident of Leichhardt, she began the tradition during a visit to a patient at the Newington State Home for Women (also unfortunately known as Newingham Asylum), where she met lost, lonely and forgotten mothers. To brighten their day she garnered support from locals, school children and businesses to donate gifts to be presented to the women.

On 2nd May 1927 the Sydney Morning Herald reported, “Next Sunday will be Mother’s Day and Mrs J Heyden of Leichardt is making her fourth annual appeal for Newingham Asylum. Gifts of red socks, handkerchiefs, scarves, mittens, scented soap, fancy aprons, cakes, sweets etc are asked for, and many may be left at the Feminists Club or at the florist’s shop, 8 Norton Street Leichardt.'

I wonder what the relevance of red socks is.
