Wombat Hollow House!

When I went through the process of building the house at Wombat Hollow I gave the task of designing it to a young architect who very creatively constructed this Balsa Wood model of the house to scale.  The model proved to be invaluable particularly when it came to making sure that we orientation of the house would take full advantage of the winter sun.

When I look at the model now I realise that I made two major changes to the original design.  I ended up not installing a wood fired  "Bakers Oven" in the kitchen because I realised it would make the room too hot, mainly because I had installed a wood fired combustion heater at the other end of the room.  I also installed another large window in the upstairs room so that I could take full advantage of the view.  

I lived in an old 30 foot caravan on the property for just over 12 months while I was owner building the house.  I really should say project managing the construction because I never actually hammered one nail in.  It was an exciting project and I loved the process.

This is a side of the house that many visitors don't really appreciate.  I always feel this is the front of the house as this is where all the views are.  The back of the house is more like a cave with only two small windows.  

While I was living in the caravan I had Rocky, a Himalayan Persion cat, Georgie Wall a Jack Russell and Sandy Wall an Australian Terrier to keep me company.  I have to say it was quite an adventure for the four of us and one I look back on with great memories.
