Rock spotting

All dressed up to examine rocks on a road cutting.
We were instructed in sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and how to recognise them, then went off in search of the great conundrum - what were 1 billion year old rocks doing on top of 500 million year old rocks?
Turns out it was the ancestor of plate tectonics, not Macalpines having the drawing upside down.
