The Jump

This afternoon was glorious, but until 2pm it was overcast and cold on Blencathra. As I descended beneath Sharp Edge, the sun burst through and made silhouettes of the climbers on the ridge. This photo captures the moment when the second climber jumps across a tricky cleft to join his companion.

Sharp Edge is one of a number of ridges which lead to the top of Blencathra. It's a text-book arete, which provides an enjoyable scramble in fine weather, and a dubious challenge in wet or icy conditions. Every year, people fall off it, sometimes with fatal consequences, which keeps the local Mountain Rescue services busy.
