Durham Cathedral

We took a walk by the river after parking up near the passport office.

The cathedral is short of cash for necessary structural work. I'm not sure how I feel about that. They don't charge for admissions, relying on voluntary donations. But it is a church so perhaps people shouldn't be charged money to go in - Jesus over-turning tables in the temple comes to mind, though I know they were money-lenders. I just don't know how it is that the church is such a wealthy landowner and has much wealth in art etc as well, but it can't (or chooses not to) sell some of it to stop the ancient buildings collapsing.

A strange little aside. We were waiting to park in the only space left while the passenger from the adjoining car stood in the middle of the only vacant place. Mr C gently tooted and was glowered at by the sour-faced woman (not as sour-faced as I look on my passport photo however). After they've moved away Mr C pointed to their GB sticker - they had put gaffer tape over the EU symbol. Nice to have ones prejudices confirmed!

Called in to say goodbye to Ella and Nathaniel on the way home. Daughter has a rotten sore throat, feels shivery and is exhausted. A day off work is unheard of for her. She is a teacher after all.

Nathaniel aged 3 was asking about a couple we know who had got married. "No they didn't, they are both men. Men marry women" he said. Daughter said that sometimes men love each other and get married and sometimes women love each other and they marry. "Hahaha, no they don't" he said.
