Kendal Castle

Another gloriously sunny day. I arrived in Kendal 40 minutes before my hair appointment so I decided to take a stroll to the castle which I hadn't visited before. I had checked the map to note the location but hadn't paid much attention to the contours. It turned out to be quite a climb.

Built in the late twelfth century it replaced Castle Howe which was sited on the opposite side of the river. It was occupied by four generations of the Parr family and William Parr, grandfather of Catherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII, died here in 1483. The castle was abandoned after William Parr's widow remarried and much of the stone for the castle was recycled and used for buildings in the town.

It would be good to revisit when I am not time constrained as there fine views.

The afternoon was spent digging out more buttercups and thankfully this particularly onerous task is now very nearly complete.
