Lonesome Ash

It's a measure of the fierce winds which whistle down the Lorton Valley, that this hardy Ash tree is still without leaves. It stands in the full face of the onslaught on the southern shore of Crummock Water. On a glorious late Spring day, when many trees in more sheltered positions are now in full leaf, this Ash can only manage a few breaking buds on its topmost branches. I'm going to keep an eye on the stoic Lonesome Ash of the Lake, and record when it drops its leaves in Autumn. It will be interesting to see how much it differs from those in the woods.
