Jervaulx Abbey
A lovely couple of hours spent wandering round the ruins of this old Cistercian Abbey. Building of the Abbey started in the 11th century but during the reformation the abbey was plundered and the roof was removed so that monks would not return. The winter that followed the roof removal was a particularly harsh one and so the deline of one of the great northern Abbeys was set. Today it is in private ownership but only a modest charge through an honesty box is made and you are then free to wander around at leisure.
