These two houses with their stair towers standing at the entrance to Dalkeith Park were built in the early 19th century for officials of one of the most influential Scottish dukes, the Duke of Buccleuch.who lived at nearby Dalkeith Palace.
The one with the car outside is Dalkeith Park House which was built in 1834 replacing an earlier house for the Duke’s chamberlains who managed the Duke’s affairs.    The chamberlain had almost complete power with very little being done in Dalkeith without his approval and he had authority over law and order, the local market, education, the care of the poor and the militia.
Next door with the white tower is Militia House which was built to accommodate army officers after the Battle of Waterloo.  The Duke had formed a small private regiment in the 1790s when Britain was being threatened by France and Napoleon. His army became known as the Canaries because of the yellow flash on the tunics.  They occupied the house until new barracks were built nearby in 1864.

I think the houses are now turned into flats in a very nice location overlooking the river and woods at the back.
