Then and now

After a morning of painting and it being such a nice day, I decided I deserved a coffee somewhere nice, and got Sav to join me.

About 3 minutes along the road, in the next village, Scropton, opposite my friend's house, there's what used to be a pub, but is now a lovely little tea and gift shop, called Vintage Pink.

After ordering I was looking at all the things around us as it's full of quaint stuff.

On the wall are a few old photographs of the area like the one I've used for my blip, showing the building when it was a pub called The Foresters Arms. I've incorporated the reflection of the new tables and chairs ( or rather I couldn't avoid the reflection! ) in an arty farty fashion!

Last week there was a question on the tea time quiz show ' Eggheads ' asking which famous name of the following 3 was Charles Darwin's grandfather. I can't remember two of the names, but the famous pottery owner Josiah Wedgwood was the third, and correct, offering.

I knew the answer because alongside the photo I've blipped is a picture of Josiah Wedgwood. He was great friends with a Thomas Bentley who was born in Scropton. Together they started up the famous pottery business, and Thomas and his wife were prominent in the upbringing of Wedgwood's eldest daughter, Susanna.

When Thomas died, another friend of Wedgwood's stepped in to help, one Erasmus Darwin.

Susanna later married Erasmus's eldest son, Robert. They had 6 children before Susanna died, the second youngest being Charles, who was 8 years old when she died.

So I didn't pass my time idly whilst waiting for pancakes with strawberries and cream to go with my coffee! Sav had a cream tea.
