Archie's cherry tree

The reason for coming to Norfolk was to see the cherry tree that my mother (aged 90) had planted about 15 years ago in memory of her uncle. It stands in the beautiful churchyard of All Saints Church in the village of Narborough.

Mum's uncle, Archibald O. Farmer, was killed on 30th May 1918 at the age of 24, while training to fly with the newly-formed Royal Air Force at the nearby airfield of Marham. He is buried here along with about a dozen other young men in a quiet corner of the churchyard, each with their simple, white headstones.

Archie was the favourite brother of my grandmother (Mum's mother). This was the first time that we had seen the tree and its memorial plaque beneath, and visiting now in springtime, with the tree in full bloom, arching over the headstones in all its beauty, was a moving experience.

I attach a photo of Archie's headstone.
