Cat chess

It was mentioned on Facebook recently that if you tape a square shape on your floor, your cat will go and sit in it.
Anyone who has lived with a cat will know intuitively that this is so, but my son Andrew couldn't resist testing it out.

It does remind me that when my mother got two kittens, they began playing 'cat chess' from quite a young age. This involved occupying square positions, like floor tiles or newspapers, in such a way as to dominate their opponent.
We never quite worked out all the rules, probably too complicated for mere mortals! It didn't seem to involve physical interaction though, more occupying spaces in such a way as to drive out the opponent.
If you watch street cats for a while you will see them playing the same game, often in three dimensions, possibly in more!
