Woody's Dilemma

April here signals not just the return of the goats, but also the traditional return of red headed woodpeckers to our backyard area.

Unfortunately for Woody, that also means the return of the grackles who are in direct competition with woodpeckers for food.

Woody spends a significant part of his day desperately trying to chase off the grackles but as soon as one leaves, three more arrive.

In this photo taken this morning of Woody sitting in one of our pines he appears to be looking to me for if not help, at least some inspiration.

Turns out though, I'm not very good at refereeing bird fights.
